MILESTONES, Page 68
DIED. Eric Goldman, 73, Princeton University history professor
and erstwhile house intellectual to President Lyndon Johnson;
following a stroke; in Princeton, N.J. After getting a Ph.D. in
American history at 22, Goldman did a stint as a TIME writer in the
1940s. His premier historical work was a chronicle of American
liberalism, Rendezvous with Destiny. When L.B.J. assigned him in
1963 to liaison with the intelligentsia, Goldman lauded "the
wide-open freshness of the Johnson Administration." Within three
years, he fell victim to the President's mistrust of academicians
and quit the Administration.
