  3.     DIED. Eric Goldman, 73, Princeton University history professor
  4. and erstwhile house intellectual to President Lyndon Johnson;
  5. following a stroke; in Princeton, N.J. After getting a Ph.D. in
  6. American history at 22, Goldman did a stint as a TIME writer in the
  7. 1940s. His premier historical work was a chronicle of American
  8. liberalism, Rendezvous with Destiny. When L.B.J. assigned him in
  9. 1963 to liaison with the intelligentsia, Goldman lauded "the
  10. wide-open freshness of the Johnson Administration." Within three
  11. years, he fell victim to the President's mistrust of academicians
  12. and quit the Administration.
